Excursion tips in the Dresden area

A bus will pick you up in the morning and take you to the city center, where you can start various city tours and walking tours. Tickets and all information about the tours on offer are available in our shop.

All historical sights in the city can be easily reached by tram line 9 or by bike. The Elbe Cycle Route is very close to our CaravaningPark and leads 5 km to the city center.

Pillnitz Castle is about 20 km upstream along the Elbe Cycle Route. If that seems too far, hop on the “White Fleet” at Käthe-Kollwitz-Ufer. The paddle steamer will take you past the beautiful Elbe slopes to the summer residence. The “White Fleet” stops at various landing stages, allowing you to hop on and off at your convenience. Please note: the captain has the discretion to allow bicycles on board.

Between 1720 and 1724, Augustus the Strong had Pillnitz Castle built according to plans by Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann. This laid the foundation for the largest palace complex in Europe, modeled on Chinese designs. In 1868, under Frederick Augustus the Just, it became the summer residence of the Saxon royal family. The Pillnitz Palace Park is known for its wealth of botanical treasures, such as the more than 200-year-old camellia, around 400 potted plants, and valuable old trees.

Cycle downstream along the adjacent Elbe Cycle Route towards Meissen, passing small idyllic pubs. After about 13 km, you will reach Meissen and have a clear view of Albrechtsburg Castle. Visit the famous porcelain factory and stroll through the alleys of Meissen's city center. If the return trip by bike seems too strenuous, take the train (e.g., from Triebischtal station with the S 1) to Radebeul (West) and from Radebeul, cycle the last 5 km on the Elbe Cycle Route back to the schaffer-mobil parking lot.

The city of Meissen is home to Albrechtsburg Castle, the first castle complex in Germany where the defensive character took a back seat to representative living. It is a masterpiece of late Gothic architecture. Meissen is also famous for the production of Meissen porcelain, the first porcelain in Europe since 1708. In the Haus MEISSEN® experience world, the show workshops invite you to witness its production. The Museum of MEISSEN®-Art takes its guests on a journey through 300 years of porcelain history.

Cycle towards Radebeul to Radebeul Ost station (15 minutes) and board the historic narrow-gauge railway, the “Lößnitzdackel.” You can take your bikes with you. Explore Moritzburg, Augustus the Strong's hunting lodge and pleasure palace, the Fasanenschlösschen, and the game reserve by bike. You can enjoy the 12 km return trip to the schaffer-mobil parking lot by bike via Schlossallee/Dresdner Straße, heading towards Radebeul/Waldstraße.

Just outside Dresden, Augustus the Strong, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony, had the prestigious Moritzburg hunting lodge and pleasure palace built. Precious porcelain, furniture, and paintings are impressive testimony to the courtly living and dining culture of the 18th century. Large-format leather wallpaper transforms the halls of the palace into a picture book of ancient mythology.

Another highlight, besides the reopened porcelain quarter, is the legendary “Moritzburg Feather Room” with Augustus the Strong's parade bed – a masterpiece made of almost two million colored feathers. One of the largest trophy collections in Europe recalls the hunting enthusiasm of the Wettin rulers and their guests. They had a zoo built around the hunting lodge, which is now worth seeing as the Moritzburg Game Reserve. To the east of the hunting lodge is the Fasanenschlösschen. It is the last original castle in Saxony preserved in the late Dresden Rococo style. The Moritzburg

Take your bike or go hiking—there are many interesting destinations in Saxon Switzerland. Take the bus (line 64) to the S-Bahn (Dresden-Pieschen station) and from there, take the half-hourly connection to Wehlen, Rathen, Königstein, Bad Schandau, and Schöna, or travel in comfort with schaffer-mobil MietSmart.

Saxon Switzerland is the ideal landscape for an active vacation in the wonderful nature of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. Hike along the Malerweg trail. The Königstein Fortress, the Bastei, and the Rathen Rock Castle near the spa town of Rathen are always worth a visit. The municipality of Reinhardtsdorf-Schöna on the border with the Czech Republic is a beautiful starting point for excursions on foot or by bike.
