Hard shell roof tents: The optimal choice for stability and speed
Hard-shell roof tents are known for their robustness and durability. They usually consist of a solid shell, mostly made of glass fiber-reinforced plastic, which protects the tent and gives it a stable structure. This construction makes them particularly resistant to adverse weather conditions and damage from branches or falling objects while driving.
1. Roof tent with 45-degree opening angle (Columbus)
The Columbus range comprises 14 hard-shell pop-up tents made from fibreglass and manufactured by hand with the utmost care to ensure first-class quality. These models offer different dimensions and internal spaces, as well as the option of adding extra rails for attaching surfboards, kayaks and other accessories. The range includes three widths: Small for 2 adults, Medium for 2 adults and 1 child, Large for 2 adults and 2 children. On request, the Small and Medium versions are also available in longer versions: X-Long (L=230 cm). The shells can be opened effortlessly thanks to automatic opening by two perfectly dimensioned gas springs and are equipped with safety locks to ensure high stability even in strong winds. With their aerodynamic design, they fit perfectly on vehicles of all sizes.

2. Tent with uniform opening (Maggiolina)
The Maggiolina range from Autohome features 32 hard-shell models, meticulously crafted from fiberglass to ensure the highest quality. Each model offers a variety of dimensions, colors, volumes, space capacities, and load capacities. Two different opening types are available: crank and gas spring. While the crank allows for smooth lifting of the shell from a single point, the gas springs, particularly on the Air Top model, offer faster lifting in two stages but require a change of position. The series offers three widths: Small for 2 adults, Medium for 2 adults and 1 child, Large for 2 adults and 2 children. In addition, the Safari models in the Small and Medium versions are also available in longer versions on request: X-Long (L=230 cm). Only one type of fabric is used in the Maggiolina series. This fabric was originally called Dralon® by Bayer in Munich. Dralon® is a fabric with a high breathability coefficient, which is perfect for natural ventilation and preventing condensation. In addition, the tent fabric is only attached to the sides, which allows for slower moisture absorption when it rains.
Fabric tents: Flexible and lightweight
In contrast, fabric roof tents, as the name suggests, are made of durable fabric material. These tents are characterized by their flexibility and light weight, making them a popular choice for campers who value mobility and ease of handling. Another advantage of fabric roof tents is their versatility. They are usually equipped with various accessories such as windows, ventilation openings, and additional pockets to improve comfort and functionality. In addition, they often offer more space inside, making them ideal for families or groups of campers.
1. Entry from outside (Overland, Overcamp)
Overcamp is the modern application of a traditional fabric tent as a car roof tent. The compact packaging size, the functionality of the mechanism, and the proven concept further emphasize this application. Thanks to the innovative folding system, additional roof loads can be transported, including surfboards, bicycles, canoes, and more. Even if you need additional sleeping space and have no plans to surf or cycle, that's no problem!

2. Entry from the inside (Overzone)
Overzone is the most spacious roof tent in this series, based on Overland's proven concept. It is perfect for any adventure, offering even more space, optimal protection from the elements, and dry access to the tent. With its high flexibility, it adapts to different needs while offering plenty of space for privacy. The roof and sides are made of a uniform fabric, very heavy quality (420g/m²), waterproof, breathable, and rot-resistant.
Making the right choice
The decision between a hard-shell and a fabric roof tent ultimately depends on your individual needs and preferences. If you value robustness, quick setup, and weather resistance, a hard-shell roof tent may be the best option for you. However, if you prefer mobility, flexibility, and more space, a fabric roof tent could be the right choice.
Regardless of your decision, it is important to take your time, compare different models, and carefully consider your requirements to find the perfect roof tent for your next camping adventures.
