Registering a motorhome:

What should be considered?

Find out everything you need to know about registering your motorhome in this article: required documents and current regulations since 2022.

Special “M” registration for motorhomes

Motorhomes are classified as such exceptional vehicles that they are grouped as special vehicles in the subclass of passenger cars in category M. This entry can be found in the registration certificate, part 1. Registering a motorhome in this class instead of a passenger car is an important legal and financial matter. Motorhomes are classified as special vehicles due to their specific use and equipment, which results in special vehicle tax and insurance rates.

By registering as a motorhome, you can benefit from reduced vehicle taxes, which can be reduced by up to 50% for diesel vehicles. In addition, motorhomes are generally not designed as everyday vehicles, which is why a special registration describes their specific purpose in detail.

Car insurance

Before registering your motorhome, you should definitely check whether your insurance company also insures motorhomes. Some insurers refuse to do so, even if the vehicle was previously insured as a passenger car. You should also compare insurance premiums, as some providers may charge higher premiums after registration as a motorhome. Correct registration as a motorhome is crucial, as there is a risk of partial or complete refusal of benefits in the event of damage if the vehicle is not officially registered as a motorhome.

Special criteria for admission

  1. A permanently installed bed that can also be used as a seat is required.
  2. The majority of the vehicle cabin must be living space.
  3. Chairs and a table must be provided, whereby the table may be foldable.
  4. A permanently installed cooking facility is required, whereby the number of burners on the stove is not specified and various fuels are accepted.
  5. Suitable storage space for luggage and other items must be provided.

Information about information sheets and possible problems

To reduce problems with the approval process, we ask that you download the latest technical data sheets from the Internet yourself. Some testing agencies, such as TÜV or Dekra, may use outdated technical data sheets, which can lead to difficulties. This usually affects motorhomes that have been modified by their owners.

Is it worth registering older motorhomes?

A really old but well-maintained motorhome can be a real bargain, especially if it can be registered as a classic vehicle. The decision on this lies in the hands of an expert who takes various factors into account. However, owners of older motorhomes should be aware of the current environmental zone regulations, as some campsites are no longer accessible to them.

What is required for approval?

To register a motorhome, you essentially need the same documents as for registering a car. These include your passport or ID card, vehicle registration document, insurance card, certificates of general inspection and emissions testing, and the G 607 test for liquid gas systems.

Requirements

The documents required for registering a motorhome are essentially the same as those required for registering a car. The registration office usually requires the following documents from applicants:

  1. Passport or identity card.
  2. For a deregistered vehicle (for initial or new registration), the vehicle registration document (registration certificate part I). For re-registration to a new owner, the vehicle registration document and the vehicle title (registration certificates part I and part II).
  3. The insurance card/coverage card (it is important to check whether the insurance also covers motorhomes).
  4. Certificates of the last general inspection and emissions test.
  5. Certificate of the last G 607 test for liquid gas systems.
  6. Proof of EC type approval.
  7. The vehicle registration number.
  8. A completed and signed SEPA direct debit mandate for the collection of motor vehicle tax.
  9. If the motorhome is registered on behalf of a third party, a power of attorney is required.
