We have 12 tips for your next trip
- Make copies of your documents and keep them in a safe place. In the event of loss, these copies will help you obtain replacements more quickly.
- Make a note of your bank's telephone number so that you can have your debit card blocked in the event of loss.
- Keep cash and identification documents safe in a neck pouch or a bag that is difficult to access. Only carry small amounts of cash in your wallet.
- Only stay overnight at secure parking areas or campsites. Avoid staying overnight in parking lots directly on the highway. If you do stay overnight in a parking lot, choose a large parking lot near a busy area.
- Be cautious if strangers approach you at parking lots or rest areas, whether to ask for directions or to show you a supposed defect. This is often a tactic to distract you. In most cases, someone else will try to steal something from your vehicle unnoticed or drive away with it if the keys are in the ignition.
- Check your vehicle for possible damage after each stay, especially the tire pressure. Thieves may have tampered with your vehicle to cause a breakdown.
- Keep the doors and windows closed when staying overnight outside of campsites. The ventilation slot on the roof hatch provides sufficient ventilation. You can secure the front doors of motorhomes from the inside with a tension belt, for example, by pulling a tension belt through the handles and armrests. This prevents them from being opened from the outside.
- Make a note of the emergency number for the police in the country you are visiting and keep it handy.
- Lock the doors when driving through cities. Keep driving if strangers try to get you to stop.
- When sightseeing, only use guarded parking lots. Use a taxi or public transportation to get into the city. Avoid crowds, as pickpockets work efficiently there and remain undetected in the crowd.
- Do not leave your valuables visible in your vehicle.
- Find out about specific country information from the State Department at www.auswaertiges-amt.de.
